Treatment techniques

Dry Needling

This is a form of treatment that uses a fine filament needle inserted gently in to the muscle or ligament to address a range of conditions. It has been proven to work effectively in common complaints especially tennis elbow, golfers elbow and Achilles tendinopathies.

This is a very safe and effective treatment modality that reduces pain and muscle tension and increases range of motion of body parts.

Often people ask, does it hurt or what are the benefits. Depending upon the condition being treated and how sore the body part is, often dry needling is the better choice in treatment outcomes. It provides immediate changes in the muscle tension and pain; it has lasting results with respect to inflammation and speeding up the healing process. In my clinical experience, dry needling is superior to most treatment modalities in the above mentioned conditions, it works tremendously in loosening muscles especially when they are fatigued and tight E.g. After big sporting events or prolonged workload.

On another very important point, dry needling treats postural conditions, headaches, jaw pain and migraines by alleviating pressure and tension in the neck. I have had many patients that have suffered from these conditions and found great benefit from these techniques.

Massage

Often just the touch of the hand is both therapeutic and comforting. Through experienced hands, Doreen Physiotherapy can help alleviate the stress, tension and daily pressures by spending some time working on those areas of concern and pain. Massage is a great treatment technique both physically and mentally.

Sports physiotherapy

Sports physiotherapists have the skills and knowledge of the types of injuries that occur in the sporting world, from recreational to professional levels. Although no injury is the same we have the understanding of how to assess, treat and manage all types of sporting injuries, including acute care, rehabilitation, injury prevention and education.

I have worked closely with many sporting teams and have implemented successful injury management programs to reduce the amount of injuries on the sporting field and time off from sport/exercise as well manage those injuries that did occur.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is anything involving exercise to help improve your strength and mobility.

This may be in lead up to a surgery (also know as prehabilitation) or post surgery or otherwise following any sort of injury.

I understand the nature of injuries and can provide you with the adequate care and advice to get you moving again.

I modify and progress your rehabilitation and exercises based on your recovery process. You will feel more confident in what you are doing and I strongly believe that educating you about your injury will provide you with the correct expectations of recovery and set you on your way to reaching your goals.

Fitness training

In my years of experience in treating injured patients, I found people were struggling with their fitness because they kept re-injuring themselves at the gym/workplace or ‘giving up’ altogether.

Through injuries of my own and understanding how difficult it can be to maintain or modify an exercise routine, I can provide the necessary support and guidance to keep you moving and give you the confidence to exercise or return to work/sport.

Biomechanical and postural Assessments

Are you finding it hard to sit up tall? Do you notice that you have tension in your neck or shoulders? Are you spending hours on your phone or computer or tablet?

These are common daily tasks that we all do. Especially these days as many people are working from home now, we have home office desks and chairs that may or may not be best set up. This may lead to postural conditions and pain developing, especially the longer we spend doing these tasks and the repetitive nature of them.

I offer assessments to check your posture, alignment and motion of your body in various positions and activities such as standing, walking, running and sitting.

Even workplace situations can lead to occupational hazards, postural demands or even labour intensive conditions. If you feel that you have had any niggles or injuries or otherwise unaware of potential positions or set up at your workplace, I can help assess and assist in making it more suitable to your needs.

Lower Limb Biomechanics

If you are a keen runner or active sports person, often we can have issues with our foot posture – mostly commonly flat feet which can lead to knee, hip or lower back problems. In my assessments, I address these issues and work out a plan to help treat and prevent injuries. Even the use of orthotics may be suggested. I provide some off the shelf varieties.

Physiotherapy.

Physiotherapists help to get you moving, to stand tall and strong and enjoy life pain free. They help you recover from injury, reduce aches and pains, improve mobility and prevent further injury. Physiotherapists are health professionals that assess, diagnose and manage a broad range of health conditions. They have a thorough understanding of what may be influencing your injuries and therefore can identify and diagnose your condition/injury promptly.

Physiotherapy treatment utilises manual ‘hands on’ therapy, movement and exercise, education and advice. Treatments can vary dependent upon the presentation and diagnosis. Doreen Physiotherapy uses the most up to date and evidenced based treatments that are proven scientific methods and supported by clinical experience. You can have the confidence that you will receive the most effective treatment to optimise your outcome.
